What is Early Education?

The government policy is that the term following their 3rd birthday, all 3 and 4 year olds can access early education if a parent / carer wishes. This can be taken at a variety of settings:

  • Local nursery schools
  • Private day nurseries
  • Children's centres
  • Childminders
  • Playgroups

If you are interested in sending your child to a private setting, please visit the Free early years places for 3 and 4 year olds page.

If you want your child to attend a school nursery then you have to apply directly to the school. If there aren't enough places for all the children who apply, then places allocated using the following criteria:

  1. Children in Public Care
  2. Children who have an older sibling at the school
  3. Children who need a place for medical or social reasons (evidence of this is needed)
  4. Children who live closest.

To find out more please visit the Walsall council's website.

Please note: If your child goes to the school they are not guaranteed a place in reception. If you are want to find out about applying for a school, please visit the Schools in Walsall page.
